Meaning “chrysanthemum exhibition”, the Kikkaten is an annual celebration of the seasonal flower at Meiji Jingū, one of Tokyo’s most visited Shintō shrines. The shrine is dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken and surrounded by a man-made forest.
What happens?
As the flower of Japan’s imperial family, chrysanthemum has a certain prestige about it. What better place to admire it than one of Tokyo’s grandest shrines?
This annual exhibition has a vast array of flowers, from rare kinds to bonsai versions.
Our tips for making the most of this event include arriving early in the morning for a calmer visit and softer light for photos. Weekdays are typically quieter than weekends.
Also, if you time your visit carefully, you may be able to catch both the chrysanthemums and the shrine’s surrounding autumn colors.
Organizers may cancel events, alter schedules, or change admission requirements without notice. Always check official sites before heading to an event.Add to Calendar
