Held over a weekend in early to mid May, the Shitaya Shrine Festival is a lively community festival that takes place at a shrine near Ueno Station.

The festival features bustling mikoshi (shoulder borne portable shrines), musical performances and yatai (outdoor food stalls) crowding the narrow streets around the shrine.

Early to mid May usually provides perfect weather for the festival. When things begin to wind down, you can continue with a few more drinks and a bite to eat in the nearby bars and izakaya of Ueno.
