March is the month for anime. The Tokyo Anime Award Festival is one big reason why.
What happens?
Along with Anime Japan, the Tokyo Anime Award Festival is another great event to celebrate international and local animated films.
Some films, such as those in the Feature Animation Competition program, will include subtitles in Japanese and English.
Highlights 2026
This year’s festival received a huge number of entries: 39 feature animation submissions from 31 countries and territories, and 997 short animation submissions from 71 countries and territories. From these, the preliminary selection committee chose 27 films in total — four feature films and 23 short films — to compete at TAAF2026.
The Feature Animation Competition includes four international titles:
- Christmas with Astrid Lindgren (Sweden, Norway)
- The Songbirds’ Secret (France, Belgium)
- The Square (South Korea)
- Stitch Head (Germany, Luxembourg)
The Short Animation Competition features 23 films from around the world, grouped into three screening slots. Selected works come from countries including Portugal, France, Singapore, Russia, South Korea, Iran, Hungary, Poland, Spain, Canada, Estonia, Belgium, the Netherlands, the U.S.A. and China.
