A shrine on the southern shores of Lake Ashi, with a picturesque torii gate on the shore of the lake.

On weekends and at popular times for visiting Hakone, such as spring and autumn, there can be long queues to get a photo beneath the “Torii of Peace” with the lake in the background.

You can also approach the torii from the water side and simultaneously photo-bomb everyone’s picture by hiring a rowboat or swan pedal boat at one of the piers at the end of the lake.

Get a Ubigi eSIM for Japan (in advance!)
Access to affordable, high-speed mobile data while in Japan is a must. Ubigi has popular packages in the 10GB--25GB range, as well as unlimited data plans for power users. TIP: Use code TOKYOCHEAPO for 10% off.

To get there, you can catch one of the many buses that traverse the district. The closest stop on the Hakone Tozan Bus is Hakone-jinja-iriguchi while the closest Izu Hakone Bus stop is Moto-Hakone. The first drops you on the main road—walk up to visit the shrine and down to visit the torii. The Moto-Hakone stop is near Lake Ashi. From there, just walk in the direction of the big torii. If coming by private car, there is a parking lot below the shrine, but it fills up during peak times.
