In 1609, a Spanish galleon traveling between the Philippines and New Spain (Mexico) was wrecked off the coast of Chiba. The governor of the Philippines, Ronrigo de Vivero was one of the survivors who managed to make their way to shore on this beach near the fishing village of Onjuku.
Don Ronrigo later met with the Shogun and this marked the start of formal contact between Japan, Spain, and Mexico. To commemorate this, there is now a momument here overlooking the beach.
