Teikoku-yu has been a beloved fixture in Higashi-Nippori since the postwar era, though not without its challenges. Originally established in 1916 as a family-run sento, it closed its doors in 2022 following the owner’s passing. After several months of closure, the bathhouse reopened in 2023, thanks to the unwavering support of its loyal patrons. This strong sense of community defines Teikoku-yu, embodying the essence of sento culture—a gathering place where locals come together to relax, play shōgi, and unwind in exceptionally hot water.

Stepping into the bathing area, you’ll immediately notice the immaculate pearlescent tile floors and the timeworn mural of Mt. Fuji, painted by the late, esteemed sento muralist Toshimitsu Hayakawa. Despite its regal ambiance, Teikoku-yu embraces a traditional, no-frills approach—there are no showerheads, only simple buckets and water faucets. However, guests are provided with complimentary shampoo, body soap, and rental towels. The bathhouse features just three firewood-heated baths: a medicated bath set at a mild 40°C, an ultrasonic bath, and an intensely hot rock-spout bath. The latter two aren’t for the faint of heart, with water temperatures reaching a locally favored 45–50°C.
