Japanese tea ceremony has a long history, dating back to the 16th century. It is centered around the cultivation of harmony, respect, purity and tranquility, and every movement, action and utensil is designed with that in mind. As part of the tea ceremony experience, you’ll learn about the spirit of Zen, and its pervasive influence on Japanese architecture, art and life in general.

Itinerary

  • First, sit back and enjoy the Japanese tea ceremony, sampling a cup of matcha green tea and an accompanying wagashi sweet
  • Get to know the significance of each of the gestures and utensils in the ceremony, as well as the art in the tea room
  • Learn about how it all connects to Zen Buddhism
  • Finally, make your own matcha in a second tea ceremony, or use the time to reflect on Zen Buddhism
