In what has become an annual event, washi (Japanese paper) lanterns will be arranged on the grass square behind Tokyo Midtown.
The organizers visit municipalities in Tohoku in the area affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 2011 and collect the hand written messages on washi lanterns from residents in order to share their feelings and the current conditions after the huge disaster.
Originally organized by the students of Tama University as a way to raise the spirits of the survivors and remember the victims of the disaster, the event is now run by the Nippon Daisuki Project (the Love Japan Project).
