Known officially as the Petit Escalator (shortened to puchi-kareta in Japanese), this is a tiny escalator in the basement of More’s Department Store in Kawasaki that is officially recognised by the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s shortest escalator.
How short? Well the difference in height between bottom and top is only 83.4cm, with a total of only 5 steps. The escalator only carries you for part of the height difference between the B2 basement level of More’s and the B2 basement of the Azalea shopping center which occupies the underground area between JR Kawasaki Station and Keikyu Kawasaki Station. You have to climb some steps to get to the start of the escalator!
The easiest way to find it is to look for the entrance to More’s adjacent to Exit 29 from within the Azalea Shopping Center, or enter More’s at ground level and head down to the B2 basement.
