Nan Station

A cheap and cosy Indian restaurant in Shimokitazawa that serves naan and curries.

Nan Station is a cheap and cosy Nepalese curry joint in Shimokitazawa which, as the name suggests, serves naan. The lunch menu starts at 500yen for a vegetable curry.  A chicken curry will set you back 580yen, a keema curry 630yen and for 680yen you have a choice of mutton, prawn or ‘green’.  Although I didn’t try it, the green looks to be a spinach based saag curry. Each of these of course comes with the item from which the restaurant takes its name – a freshly prepared naan the size of a toddler’s torso.

The store itself has a relaxed cafe/bar feel – as one would expect in Shimokita. There are also a couple of outdoor tables which with the interesting street scene would be perfect on a warm day

Although the curry looks rather small in the photograph, that’s only because the naan was so huge.  It was a creamy, authentic veggie curry that more than filled me up.  In addition to curries, they had a range of lunch menu add-ons, including a beer for 280yen along with a variety of fruit drinks, salads and desserts.

It’s a short walk from the station through the slightly labyrinthine streets to the north of the station – so take note of the map. All in all a nice spot to stop off for a cheap lunch while pottering around the awesome cheapo shopping that Shimokita has to offer.
