Although Doutor describes itself succinctly with the phrase “Gourmet Coffee Shop”, we at Tokyo Cheapo think it should change this to  “Shit average* coffee, but a very cheap and great place for hot dogs, matcha latte, hot chocolate and some of the sandwiches are quite good too”.

* Since I don’t like coffee, I’m quoting from the opinion of others – the consensus seems to be “average” rather than the initial “shit”

Sauerkraut Dog

There’s not many places selling decent hot dogs in Tokyo, and I suspect where you find them for sale, they probably aren’t particularly cheap being somewhat of a foreign speciality. Doutor’s hot dogs are both fairly close to a German style “sausage in bread” and super cheap. “German Dog” 200yen, “Lettuce Dog” 240yen, and my personal recommendation “Sauerkraut Dog” 250yen.

God knows how they dreamed up the idea of selling hot dogs in a “Gourmet Coffee Shop”, but I’m glad to find a decent dog at a decent price. And economy of scale has obviously worked out well for them (and us!).

Also an honorable mention to the Matcha latte, hot chocolate and the breakfast set (opting for tea not coffee, since the coffee is fairly poor).

There’s masses of Doutor cafes everywhere in Tokyo, so no need for a map, just look out for the rather 80’s yellow and black logo and hot dog posters.

Cheapo Tips:

Breakfast set is a cheapo favourite, and of course the sauerkraut dog. Also The Tokorozawa Doutor has a really nice interior.
