The oldest of the many temples that fill Yanaka, Tennoji was founded by Nichiren in 1274. The famous Yanaka cemetery once belonged to the temple but was made public following a shift in religious focus by the Meiji government and never returned. The grounds are known for their large bronze Buddha – one of the seven Gods of Fortune and the only one located in Yanaka. There are also mature cherry trees which draw crowds in Spring.
