Sengakuji is a small but important Buddhist temple near Shinagawa Station, drawing pilgrims from all over Japan.
It’s part of the “Soto” Zen school and was built by Tokugawa Ieyasu in 1612. However, it burnt down a few decades later and was reconstructed.
The temple is known as the resting place of the brave 47 Ronin (masterless samurai), with a festival held every year in mid-December to commemorate their story.
