As the temperature gets to ridiculous highs, it’s the perfect time to hide out at an air-conditioned museum — at night.

What happens?

Several Tokyo Metropolitan museums and galleries will open their doors after hours on summer evenings, mostly on Fridays in August. Opening hours vary, but most participating venues will stay open until either 8 p.m. or 9 p.m.

Special events and visitor benefits are planned, with details to be announced later.

  • Edo-Tokyo Museum in Ryogoku — until 9 p.m. on Fridays, Aug. 7, 14, 21 and 28
  • Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum in Ueno — until 8 p.m. on Fridays, Aug. 7, 14, 21 and 28
  • Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum in Meguro/Shirokanedai — until 9 p.m. on Fridays, Aug. 7, 14, 21 and 28
  • Tokyo Photographic Art Museum in Ebisu — until 9 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays, Aug. 6, 7, 13, 14, 20, 21, 27 and 28
  • Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo in Kiyosumi-Shirakawa — until 9 p.m. on Fridays, Aug. 7 and 14
  • Tokyo Shibuya Koen-dori Gallery in Shibuya — until 9 p.m. on Fridays, Aug. 7, 14, 21 and 28
