The Thai Fair (link in Japanese) – traditionally one of the most popular of the ethnic festivals at Yoyogi Park – is on this weekend at the events square. The event runs from 10am to 7pm on both days and will feature lots of stalls with Thai food and drink as well as stage performances – including a popular artist flown in from Thailand.  The closest station is Harajuku/Meijijingumae on the JR Yamanote Line and Tokyo Metro Chiyoda and Fukutoshin Lines.

This Saturday, the 27th of July sees the 41st Shinjuku Eisa Festival. Eisa is a traditional dance originating in the Okinawan islands. The organisers are only expecting about 1 million people to turn up to watch!
The event runs from 1pm until 8pm. See the cheapo events listing for more.

The Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival - the big daddy of summer fireworks festivals is on this weekend. The fireworks kick off at 7:05pm and run for 90 minutes. This festival attracts massive crowds. Check out our guide from last year on surviving the Sumidagawa Fireworks Festival.

The last day of the Zojoji Temple Bon Odori Festival is on in Akasaka this evening. Zojoji is a temple in Akasaka in the shadow of the Biz Tower. This festival sees an interesting mix of residents and local office workers converging on the temple. The festival is well attended so there are plenty of options for festival food and drink – as well as lots of taiko drumming and “coal mine dance” free for all. Check the cheapo events listing for more info.

Greg has been been searching for a cheaper way of doing things in and around Tokyo for more than 12 years. Greg's qualification for being a cheapo include walking up to an hour across Tokyo to save on the 160 yen subway fare and still having clothes in his dresser from 1998. When not searching for the izakaya with the cheapest beer in Japan, he develops web sites.
