The Christmas/winter illuminations continue their roll-out this weekend with the giant battle robot Gundam getting in on the act. Stationed outside the Diver City shopping center in Odaiba, the Gundam statue will be decorated with lots and lots of LEDs with shows running every half hour from 4:30pm until 9pm. The light-up begins on Saturday, December 1st and runs until the 25th of December. Closest stations are Daiba on the Yurikamome Line and Tokyo Teleport on the Rinkai Line.

If that’s not enough reason to go to Odaiba, then how about a fireworks show?  The folks in Odaiba have got their seasons mixed up so they’ll be launching fireworks over Tokyo Bay at 7pm on the first four Saturdays of December starting this Saturday, December 1st.  Odaiba Rainbow Hanabi 2012 will only last for 10 minutes, so you might want to figure out something else to do while you’re there – the Gundam light-up being the obvious option!  Closest stations are the same as for Gundam.

Since you’re there already, you might as well check out the ‘Memorial Tree’ light-up at the Decks shopping center.  As plain old twinkly lights are sooo passe, there will of course be a half hourly show during which the illumination will change in time to music.  By the look of the photo, this is date bait. So if you’re looking to light that romantic fire, this is the place to head after the geekiness of Gundam and the spectacle of fireworks.  The closest station is Odaiba Kaihin Koen on the Yurikamome Line, but you could walk from Diver City.
