Tokyo events for Monday, February 24 to Sunday, March 2, 2025.

It’s the week before Hinamatsuri (March 3) — also known as the Doll Festival or Girls’ Day — and that means many shops, homes, and spots are setting up traditional Japanese Imperial court figurines. Some of the biggest displays we’ve highlighted are below.

Thousands will run in the Tokyo Marathon, and many will take to the stalls to grab some steaming sweet potato.

Katsuura Big Hinamatsuri

One of the biggest Hinamatsuri events in Japan, the Katsuura Big Hinamatsuri sees around 4,000 traditional Japanese dolls set up around Katsuura City.

Suggested Activity
Get Tickets To the Samurai Restaurant in Shinjuku (Up to 30% Off)
Experience one of the craziest, most colorful places in Tokyo — the all-new Samurai Restaurant, from the creators of the Robot Restaurant. Get your tickets and sit back for a wild show of lasers, lights, samurai, dancers and other uniquely Japanese weirdness.

Kōnosu Surprise Hinamatsuri

Every year, a gigantic pyramid is erected to celebrate Hinamatsuri, a Japanese holiday otherwise known as Dolls’, or Girls’, Day. There will be several pyramids of Hina dolls set up around Kōnosu, but the biggest is held at the main venue in Elumi Kounosu Shopping Mall on the 1F.

Iwatsuki Hina Doll Festival

On top of being Girls’ Day, it’s also Dolls Day — and the town of Iwatsuki in Saitama has a reputation for the best dolls in Japan. Iwatsuki is one of a few towns left in Japan prized for their doll making and craftsmanship.

Showa Kayo Night: Love Love Valentine Edition

If your one true love is music, Showa Kayo Night really gets you. From nostalgic hits from the 80s to catchy city pop, fall in love all over again.

Shinagawa Yakiimo Terrace

If you are looking for your sweet potato fix, look no further. The annual Yakiimo Terrace is back and looking baked to perfection.

Farmers and Kids Festa

The strangely named Farmers and Kids Festa is an event held at Yoyogi Park. Farmers will be sharing their knowledge about agriculture with experiences like spinach harvesting, rice threshing, and peanut moulting.

Nagatoro Fire Festival

This is a fiery, thrilling festival in the beautiful setting of Nagatoro in Saitama. Expect dramatic performances as monks brave roaring flames to cleanse themselves and remove misfortune.

Tokyo Marathon

Running is a very popular sport in Japan and the Tokyo Marathon is hugely oversubscribed at registration time. Even if you are not running the event, there’s a festive atmosphere along the course so it’s worth checking out.

Marunouchi Ukiyo-e Projection Mapping

Ukiyo-e is one of Japan’s most iconic art forms — there’s almost no one who wouldn’t recognize masterpieces like Hokusai’s Great Wave. The Marunouchi building will feature the six great artists of ukiyo-e, a tribute to the masters of the style.

Kotatsu Boat in Nagatoro

Winter cruises can sometimes be a little too chilly for comfort. This 20-minute Nagatoro cruise takes you through the rock formations of the Arakawa River, giving you a view of the gorgeous landscape.
