Tokyo Summer Bargain Sales 2013

It’s never quite made sense to me why all the fashion stores start to dump their summer lines at the start of July when it suddenly gets hot. I always thought you had a sale to clear space for the next season’s stock of clothing.  Of course it’s not about inventory control, it’s all about the shopping. Without that feeling that you’re getting a bargain, you’re less likely to head out in this stinking heat and to shovel your hard earned cash over the counter.

Something to be aware of is that most retailers don’t like to telegraph their summer sale dates. While many of the listings below state a mid July close, many of them start straight up again with a ‘Summer Sale Part 2′. As is usual there are always lots of “up to xx off” and other not so subtle ways to convince you you’re getting a better deal than you think.

All the big shopping centers in Odaiba (Venus Fort, Aqua City Odaiba, Daiba City Tokyo Plaza, Decks Tokyo Beach) are combining for a sale they are calling “Odaibargain” .  The sale runs from Saturday 29th of June to Friday, July 12th. However, there will likely be ongoing sales at many of the chain stores within these centers after July 12th.

The Chain Gang

Although a lot of the places above are filled with the big chains, they tend to ignore what is going on around them. They also seem to be a lot cagier about revealing the exact start and end of sale periods.
