Marunouchi is one of the most important commercial districts of Tokyo and hence Japan. In feudal times, the regional Daimyo (feudal lords) built mansions along what is now known (although not by many) as Daimyo Dori. As a clear indication that modern Japan is driven by corporations rather than lords the places where their mansions stood are now occupied by the bastions of Japan Inc. The enormous yet not formally connected Mitsubishi group of companies have their head offices in the district. It’s also popular with international accounting and law firms – this town belongs to the suits!

Stations in the area include Nijuubashi Station on the Tokyo Metro Chiyoda Line and Tokyo Station which has lots of lines. After what seems like a decade of renovation, the wonderful Edwardian red brick Tokyo Station building has finally been re-opened and is definitely worth a look if you’re passing through or in the area.
