Take your pick of Bon Odori dance festivals and fireworks displays this week — there’s quite a choice.
If that doesn’t satiate you, try a taste of lanterns, Sri Lankan food, summer extravaganzas, and idols.
Nakameguro Summer Festival
Returning for the 60th time, the Nakameguro Summer Festival takes over this fashionable neighborhood for two nights of outdoor dance performances. Festivities begin at 6 p.m. and conclude at 8:30 p.m. on both days.
Sri Lanka Festival
Head to the Sri Lanka Festival for Sri Lankan food, drink, and cultural workshops. There will be yoga classes, workshops, and a market selling everything from jewelry to carvings, to ceramics to Sri Lankan spices.
Hachiōji Festival
See impressive floats and soak up the festive atmosphere in Hachiōji. With a history going back to the Edo period, the Hachiōji Festival is one of the biggest float festivals in the Kantō region.

Chidorigafuchi Moat Lantern Floating Festival
Chidorigafuchi Moat is stunning during cherry blossom season, but it also lights up for this annual lantern floating festival known as Tōrō Nagashi. Around 2,000 lanterns will travel down Chidorigafuchi Moat, near the Imperial Palace, as the sun sets.
Balinese Kecak Festival
The Kecak Festival is one of Shinjuku’s main summer events. Watch the Balinese bamboo percussion orchestra, Jegog, and see human voices and electronic instruments combine in a live performance of Symphonic Suite Akira.
Shibuya Bon Odori Dance Festival
Shibuya shuts down the roads around Shibuya 109 for a traditional summer dance party. Unique Hachiko-themed motifs are scattered around the event, and you can pick up a t-shirt with the design from a nearby stall.
Hanazono Shrine Shinjuku Bon Odori
If you’re looking for a centrally located summer festival with a healthy dose of dancing, you can’t do much better than the annual Bon Odori dance festival held at Shinjuku’s Hanazono Shrine. The Hanazono Shrine rendition features local folk songs and dancing, including a pre-war tune specific to the area known as Shinjuku Ondo.
Nakano Bon Dance Festival
The Bon Odori (Bon Dance) festival held annually at Nakano Central Park attracts huge numbers of revellers. Luckily, the park is big, so there is plenty of space to spread out. The Nakano Bon Odori is a little different to regular Bon Odori festivals.
Tsukiji Honganji Bon Dance Festival
Dance to the beat of the taiko drums — or just watch — at this annual Bon Odori dance festival at Tsukiji Honganji Temple.
Sunshine City Ikebukuro Bon Odori Dance Festival
Dance, feast, and be merry at the Sunshine City Ikebukuro Bon Odori Festival. This is a classic summer tradition.
Tokyo Idol Festival (TIF)
Tokyo Idol Festival is the world’s largest celebration of idol culture. Kicking off at the height of idol culture’s resurgence in 2010, it has since exploded in popularity, regularly attracting tens of thousands of die-hard attendees.
Makuhari Beach Fireworks Festival
This year’s Makuhari Beach Fireworks Festival will take place on August 2, celebrating its 47th anniversary. As one of the country’s biggest fireworks displays, the event sees over 20,000 fireworks shot from different angles across Makuhari Beach.
Kurihama Perry Fireworks Festival
This high-spirited summer celebration in Yokosuka marks Commodore Matthew Perry’s 1853 landing in Kurihama. The day’s festivities range from historical reenactments to a local bazaar.
Southern Beach Chigasaki Fireworks Festival
Beachside fireworks await only 90 minutes from central Tokyo. The Southern Beach Chigasaki Fireworks Festival is best known for its suichū kujaku — underwater peacock fireworks that fan out just above the sea surface like glowing tail feathers.
Edogawa Fireworks Festival
Running for 50 years, the Edogawa Fireworks Festival is one of the more senior fireworks festivals in Tokyo. The 2025 fireworks will celebrate the half-century milestone with extra explosive goodies and an attempt at a Guinness World Record™.
Itabashi and Todabashi Fireworks Festival
The Itabashi Fireworks Festival takes place at the same time and location as Todobashi Fireworks Festival. Roughly 13,000 fireworks are expected to go off — and there should be some colorful characters and flower shapes in the mix.
Ōme City Nōryō Fireworks Festival
The Ōme City Nōryō Fireworks Festival features around 3,500 fireworks hurled into the night sky over Nagayama Park in Ōme City in the evening of the first Saturday in August.
Minato Mirai Smart Fireworks Festival
The Minato Mirai Smart Fireworks Festival celebrates the charms of Yokohama. The fireworks are held on the first Monday of August each year.
Enoshima Summer Fireworks Festival
See a short fireworks show as part of the Miami Beach Show Summer Fireworks in Enoshima. The fireworks are scheduled from 7:40 to 7:45 p.m.
Hakone Ashinoko Summer Festival
Moto-Hakone is the center of festivities with food stalls and festival games to keep you entertained and in the festival spirit.
